How far out from the house can the deck go? At a North Hollywood site visit we answer with a tape and the span tables. Joists reach only so far before they need a beam, and each beam needs posts and footings. A deck can also cantilever a short way past its last beam, which keeps posts out of a planting bed or off a weak edge. If the yard falls away, the reach is limited by how tall the posts can safely get.

Joists, beams and cantilevers

Joist size and spacing set the clear span, and a deeper joist reaches farther with fewer beams below. Where a single run is too long, a dropped or flush beam breaks it, and posts carry that beam to footings. The overhang past a beam is kept to a fraction of the back span so the deck does not tip or bounce at its edge. Guards on a cantilevered edge are anchored back into the joists. We draw a few layouts and show where each one puts its posts.

LADBS plan check

Plan check for North Hollywood runs through LADBS. The set shows joist and beam sizes, spans, overhangs, post heights and footing sizes, so the reviewer can trace every load to the ground. A long overhang or a tall post brings engineering into the set, along with bracing details. Guards at a cantilevered edge get their own detail, showing how each post is tied back. The inspector sees the beam, post and hanger connections while they are still exposed, and checks the guards at final.
