Light-gauge galvanized steel joists are one framing choice we offer on a Van Nuys deck, and they answer two problems wood has on an inland lot. Steel joists hold their shape through hard sun and dry heat, so the surface stays flat, and termites cannot eat them. It also adds no fuel under the boards. Treated lumber remains the standard option, and either frame can carry composite, PVC or hardwood decking.

Steel and wood framing compared

Steel joists come in set lengths with matching ledgers, hangers and blocking, and they can span farther than lumber of similar depth, which can mean fewer beams and posts. They need fasteners rated for steel and decking clips made for the system. Treated lumber is easier to cut on site and costs less, though its posts need ground-contact grade and its cut ends need preservative. If the lot slopes, either frame gets bracing on tall posts, and the engineer sizes the connections.

Surfaces and LADBS review

At grade, a broom-finished concrete slab or concrete pavers take heat and daily use, and a lighter color stays cooler underfoot. On a raised steel frame, the boards come from the products approved for that system. LADBS reviews the plans for a Van Nuys deck and checks that the framing and decking are approved for the use, which matters with steel, since the manufacturer evaluation report goes in with the set. The inspector sees the footings, the frame and the finished guards.
