A deck earns its keep on an ordinary weeknight: a table that does not rock, a door that opens onto it without a step down, and boards that stay quiet underfoot. For a Los Angeles house, we plan the surface from that kind of use outward. If the yard falls away from the house, the deck becomes a raised floor on posts, and its footings and ledger get designed before any board is chosen.

Planning the surface around use

We start with the door threshold. The deck surface sits just below it, so water stays outside and nobody trips on the way out. Then come the clear widths: room for a table with chairs pulled back, a path past the grill, and stairs that land on solid ground. Guards go where the drop calls for them, built to the height and baluster spacing the code sets. On a flat lot a patio on a compacted base can do the same job at grade, and we show both layouts on the drawing so the choice is plain before pricing.

LADBS permit and inspections

Los Angeles issues deck permits through LADBS, the city building department. A raised deck goes in with framing plans, and if posts are tall or the lot drops steeply, calculations from an engineer go along with them. Inspectors see the footing holes before concrete is poured, the framing and hardware before the decking hides them, and the finished guards and stairs at the end. A ground-level patio with no roof can need less paperwork, though any wall that holds back soil beside it is reviewed on its own terms.
