ADU Construction in Torrance, Lifted Over the House
Torrance ADU construction with trusses lifted over the house by boom truck, concrete pumped through the side yard, and the route measured before any delivery.
Over the house is sometimes the most practical route for trusses headed to the back of a Torrance lot. A boom truck parked at the curb can lift a bundle across the roof and set it beside the new walls, which spares a narrow side yard from long framing pieces. Whether that works depends on the boom's reach, any overhead lines near the truck and enough level room to set its outriggers.
Planning the lift
We measure from the curb to the set point and compare it with the truck's load chart, because capacity drops as the boom extends. Power lines near the truck have to be cleared by the distance safety rules set, or the utility covers them first. Blocking street parking for the truck is cleared with the City of Torrance ahead of the date, and cones and a spotter keep the sidewalk safe. The lift is a single short visit, so roof trusses, sheathing and roofing bundles are ordered to arrive together.
What still travels through the side yard
Everything the boom does not lift moves on the ground. A line pump at the curb pushes concrete through a hose laid along the side yard, so no truck crosses the lawn. Studs, plates and plumbing pipe go back by hand cart, and spoil from the footing trenches leaves in a motorized buggy. We measure the gate and the narrowest point along the house before ordering anything, and lumber lengths are chosen to make the turn. The path is swept and checked for damage at the end of each week, with photos for the record.

ADU Construction in Torrance: questions
Where the boom can reach the set point from the curb, inside the setbacks, and where the side yard route stays usable. A spot behind the garage, or close to the side where the truck parks, keeps the reach shorter. If the yard slopes, a pad near the level of the house keeps carts off the climb.
Yes, if the Torrance unit is one level and stays within 500 square feet. The City of Torrance gets a site plan from us that measures the unit from each lot line and notes where the truck stands for the lift. If the pad needs slope engineering, we quote it with construction after we walk the route.
A boom truck is billed by the visit, so grouping the lifts keeps that line short. A line pump adds a setup charge on each pour. A narrow side yard adds hand labor for everything the boom cannot carry. On a sloped pad, stepped footings add concrete and forming.
