Sierra Madre Decks & Patios With a Rain Route
Sierra Madre decks and patios with a planned route for rain: gapped boards, an under-deck catch system over a patio, and uphill runoff carried around posts.
Rain that falls on a Sierra Madre deck has to end up somewhere other than the house wall and the footings, and we draw that route before the framing. Boards are gapped so water passes through. Where a patio sits beneath the deck, a membrane system between the joists can catch that water and carry it to a gutter at the outer beam, so the space below stays dry enough to use.
A dry patio under the deck
An under-deck system fastens below the joists or drapes over them before the boards go down, sloped toward the outer edge. The gutter at that edge feeds a downspout on one of the posts, and the downspout empties into a pipe that leads past the footings to a planned outlet. At the house, the ledger still gets its own flashing, since the catch system does nothing for the rim joist. Lighting and a ceiling fan can mount to the underside once it is sealed. Each joint in the system is lapped in the direction water flows, so a missed seam shows up as a drip during the first rain.
Uphill runoff and mapped parcels
If the lot slopes, runoff from the higher ground can reach the posts from the uphill side. A shallow lined swale or a gravel trench with a perforated pipe intercepts it and carries it around the deck, and the grading plan shows where that water leaves the property. Soil that stays wet carries less load, so this work protects the footings as much as the patio. Sierra Madre includes parcels in mapped fire hazard zones. Where a deck stands on one, its underside may need enclosing to meet ember rules. The drawings then show how the enclosed space drains and dries.

Decks & Patios in Sierra Madre: questions
Testing on a Sierra Madre lot with any slope shows where firm material begins, and the engineer sets each footing from that. Water matters to the answer as well, because the design keeps runoff from collecting at the holes and softening the bearing soil. Inspection of each excavation comes before the pour.
The address is checked against the fire hazard severity map before design starts. On a mapped parcel, approved ember-resistant decking is required, with the underside closed or screened. Unmapped lots follow the general code, and a fire-rated board remains a choice there.
The quote separates them. A larger footprint means more decking and framing. Raising the frame lengthens the posts, calls for bracing and pushes footings down. A catch system under the boards or a swale on the uphill side is listed as an item of its own, so each can be weighed alone.
