ADU Construction in Whittier, Starting With a Sun Reading

Whittier ADUs placed after a sun-path reading of the future roof, so the solar array, roof direction and footings are set before design begins.

Before any footprint is sketched on a Whittier lot, we stand where the new roof would sit and read how much sun reaches it through the year. California's energy code ties a solar array to most newly built detached units, sized from floor area and climate zone. Trees, the main house or a neighbor's second story can shade that roof enough to shrink the array or excuse it, so the reading can move the unit or turn its ridge.

Reading the shade

A sun-path tool lays the sky's arc for each month over a photo taken from the likely roof height, so anything blocking the sun's lowest path of the year shows at once. The open roof left over is what the energy code calls solar access, and below a set amount the array can shrink or drop away. A single tall tree in the sun's path can shade a whole roof plane. Sliding the unit a short way or rotating its ridge often frees up usable roof without any trimming, and we test both on paper.

Roof, framing and review

The roof plane that sees the most open sky carries the panels, so the ridge direction is chosen with the reading in hand. Racking adds weight and attachment points, and rafters and their connections are sized for that load. Conduit from the array runs to the unit's panel, with the inverter location drawn on the set. The array layout is part of what Whittier plan check approves. If the yard slopes, the footing design follows a soils engineer's findings, and a unit stepped into the grade still keeps its panels clear of the house's shadow.
