ADU Construction in El Monte, Clear of the Electric Meter
El Monte ADUs placed so the electric meter keeps its working space and utility access, with a short feeder route and a foundation matched to the grade.
The electric meter on an El Monte house claims a patch of open ground that a backyard unit cannot take. Code reserves a working space in front of the meter and panel, wide and deep enough for an electrician to stand in, and the utility needs a clear path to it. If the meter faces the yard, that space shapes where the unit's walls can go. On a sloping lot, the path to it also has to stay walkable.
The space in front of the meter
The working space spans at least the width of the equipment, extends out from its face and rises to a set height, and nothing may be stored or built inside it. A new wall, a water heater closet or a gate that swings into that space fails inspection. When the preferred spot for the unit would crowd the meter, the meter and panel can be moved with the utility's approval, though that adds design, a new service run and a scheduled outage. A small shift in the unit, or an entry turned so the clear area doubles as part of a walkway, can solve it at far less cost.
Feeding power to the unit
Power for the unit leaves the house panel, or a new meter section, through a conduit sized for the feeder, and the conduit exits on the side facing the unit so the run stays short. Burial depth depends on the conduit type, and the trench keeps its distance from the water line. A subpanel inside the unit, placed where it also keeps its clear space, receives the feeder. The building department serving El Monte inspects the trench while it is open, then the panel work before the walls close. If the yard slopes, the conduit follows the grade with gentle sweeps.

ADU Construction in El Monte: questions
Clear of the meter's working space and the utility's path to it, within the setbacks, and where the feeder and sewer runs stay reasonable. Higher ground near the house keeps both runs short if the yard slopes. Lower ground on piers stretches the trenches across the grade.
If an El Monte unit stays single-story and does not exceed 500 square feet, the package drawings apply, and its site plan locates the meter, the clear space in front of it and the feeder route. We quote the build and any slope engineering together once the meter, the route and the ground have been looked at on site.
Moving the meter, if the unit cannot fit around it, is the large utility item. A long feeder trench adds conduit and wire, and on a grade that trench crosses the slope with more digging. Footings lower down the slope run deeper. All of it is priced separately.
