Whittier Decks & Patios, Guard Posts Tested

A hard push on every guard post opens a Whittier deck visit, finding loose bolts, notched posts and a weak rim before railing or boards are quoted.

We lean hard on each guard post of a Whittier deck, close to its top, and watch where it gives before anything is priced. A post that rocks at the rim, or one notched halfway through and held by a pair of bolts, cannot resist the push the code expects a guard to take. That test decides whether the railing can be refinished or has to be rebuilt with new posts and blocking behind the rim.

What the push shows

Movement at the base points to the connection: bolts loose in worn holes, a rim joist too thin to anchor them, or no blocking behind it. Movement higher up points to a post that is split or soft. A notched post is a weak detail, since the notch leaves too little wood around the bolts. Where posts fail, the guard is rebuilt with full posts bolted through the rim and tied back to the joists with blocking or hold-down hardware sized for the code's guard load. The push also tells us how the rim and the joist ends are holding up.

Rebuilding the edge

New guard posts sit inside the rim with blocking on each side and the hold-down or through bolts the detail calls for. Infill openings stay small enough that a 4 inch sphere cannot pass, and the rail sits at the guard height the code sets. If the yard slopes away, the downhill guard stands over the greatest fall, so its posts are tested first. Whittier's plan reviewers see the guard detail, and the inspector sees the post connections before boards or trim cover them.
