New Construction in Arleta, With the Gas Meter Sized to the House
New Construction in Arleta with the gas load totaled during design, so a meter too small for the new appliances is caught before the piping is sized.
An existing gas meter at the front of an Arleta lot gives no sign of how much it can deliver. That only matters once the new appliances are totaled: water heater, furnace, range, dryer and perhaps a pool heater or fire pit. If the total exceeds what the meter and service line can carry, the gas utility has to upsize them, and the house piping is laid out around the size it approves.
Totaling the load and sizing the pipe
Each gas appliance lists its input on the rating plate, and the plumbing designer adds them up. Pipe sizes then come from the code tables, using the length of the longest run from the meter to the farthest outlet and the pressure the utility supplies. A longer run needs larger pipe, so a meter at the street feeding a house set far back can change sizes through the whole system. Where a design drops gas in favor of heat pumps and induction, the same check moves to the electrical panel and the service from the street.
Sequence with the utility and the inspector
A meter upgrade starts with an application to the gas utility listing the new load. Their crew may replace the meter, the regulator or the line from the main, on a timetable they set. On our side, the house piping is installed, pressure tested and inspected by LADBS. Once that test passes, the city releases the gas service, and only then does the utility set or swap the meter. Framing and interior work carry on in the meantime. Utility charges are carried as a separate line and firmed up when the utility replies.

New Construction in Arleta: questions
The house is placed on the lot from a survey of its lines and grades and a soils report drawn from borings. For utilities, the designer should total the gas and electric loads while the plans are still schematic, since an upgrade request goes to the utility well before construction. When a house is being demolished, its gas and electric services are shut off and capped first.
Trenching is where access shows. A new gas or water line from the street to a house set back on the lot needs a trench the whole way, and where a machine cannot reach that line, it is dug by hand. Cutting and patching a driveway or walk adds to it. Each of those appears as its own line in the quote.
Yes. The mechanical and plumbing sheets drive this part of the price. When they list each gas appliance and its input, the piping is priced from them. When they are still schematic, the piping and any utility upgrade sit as an allowance, replaced by firm numbers once the designer finishes the load calculation.
