ADU Construction in Studio City, Starting at the Gas Meter
Studio City ADU construction that begins at the gas meter: what the unit's appliances burn, how far the pipe runs, and which spots on the lot it can reach.
Whether the unit burns gas at all is the first fork in a Studio City plan. A range, a tank water heater or a wall furnace needs a pipe from the meter, and that pipe has limits on size and length that can shrink the list of places a unit may stand. We locate the meter, follow the line to the house and note the run to each candidate spot before any wall is drawn.
What the pipe can carry
Every gas appliance wears a BTU rating on its label, so we add the ratings up and set the total against what the existing line was sized to serve. Pipe size follows both that load and the length of the run, which means a unit set far back may need a larger pipe than one near the house. Gas pipe is pressurized, so it can rise, dip and turn corners wherever the trench requires. LADBS inspects the piping past the meter, and the gas utility handles the meter itself.
When the unit skips gas
An all-electric unit removes the gas question and hands it to the panel. Induction cooking, ductless heating and a heat pump water heater need no gas pipe and no flue, yet together they add load, so the calculation on the main panel tells us whether it can stay as it is. Whichever way the unit goes, a trench leaves the house with something in it, and any gas pipe sharing that trench with electrical conduit must keep the separation the code requires. We draw every route on one site plan and mark the gas shutoff where an inspector can find it.

ADU Construction in Studio City: questions
If the lot slopes, the sewer connection sets the pad more than the gas does. Drain pipe runs by gravity and needs a steady fall toward the main, so the unit's plumbing has to start above the connection point. Gas pipe is pressurized and needs no fall, only a sensible run from the meter. We mark both connections first, then test each corner of the yard against them.
Our package fits a Studio City unit that is a single level with a floor of 500 square feet at most. LADBS wants the gas appliances and the pipe sizing shown, and the mechanical notes on the plans carry both. Engineering for a graded pad and the construction itself are quoted after we visit the lot.
A long gas trench and a larger pipe both add labor, and any wall needed to hold the pad up is priced on top. Going all-electric drops the gas line but may bring a panel upgrade, so we price both routes side by side and you can compare them line by line.
