Bulky things decide whether a small Panorama City ADU feels crowded, so the unit gets one deep storage closet drawn in at framing. Suitcases, a vacuum, tools and maybe a bicycle all go there, behind doors that open across nearly its full width, with a light that comes on as they open. Placed on an interior wall, the closet also puts a layer of stored things between the bedroom and the main room.

Blocking and depth

Loaded shelves pull on their supports, so the framer sets wood blocking between studs at every shelf line while the walls are open, and the shelf standards later screw through the drywall into it. A suitcase standing on its side sets the depth, and anything deeper turns the back into dead space. Wide bypass or bifold doors expose most of the interior at once. A ceiling hook for a bicycle anchors into a doubled joist or a header. Shelf heights appear on the drawings, so the blocking lands where it belongs.

Light, air and power

The electrical code treats closet lighting on its own terms, with rules on fixture type and clearance from stored items, so we use an enclosed LED fixture near the door on a jamb switch. A louvered door or an undercut lets air pass, which keeps stored fabric from going stale. One dedicated outlet runs a vacuum dock or tool chargers, and any e-bike battery charges on a listed charger mounted away from combustibles. The LADBS inspector looks at the fixture and the circuit during the final inspection.
