"Can the big trees along the back fence stay?" On a West Covina parcel, we find out by mapping each tree's root zone against the planned footprint, the grading limits and the utility trenches. Mesa Rock Construction looks at the lot first, including where any change in grade sits near a trunk, because a cut or a fill close to a tree can kill it as surely as removal. What that map shows decides where the house can go.

Footings and trenches near roots

An arborist marks the protection zone around each tree, usually tied to the canopy spread or the trunk diameter, and fencing goes up on that line before any machine arrives. Inside it, digging is done by hand or with an air spade so major roots can be found and left whole. A footing that must cross roots can bridge them on a grade beam carried by piers. Utility lines can be tunneled under roots or routed around them. Each step adds labor, and the quote shows it next to the tree it protects.

Grading close to a trunk

Most feeder roots live in the upper layer of soil, so lowering the grade near a tree cuts them and raising it smothers them. If the lot slopes, a short retaining wall at the edge of the root zone can hold the new grade while the soil around the trunk stays at its old level. Drainage is adjusted so water does not pond against the bark. If the city lists a tree as protected, work inside its root zone may need its own permit and an arborist report, which the building department reviews with the plans.
