West Hills Decks & Patios, Probed Before Design
West Hills decks and patios start with soil probes at each footing spot and a look behind the siding at the ledger line, then design and LADBS review.
A soil probe goes in first at a West Hills deck site, at each spot where a footing is likely to land. How far it slides before stopping says whether the top layer is loose fill or firm ground. We note the readings, then measure the sill height and the drop to grade along the house. If the lot slopes, those readings tell the engineer where a formal soil report is needed.
From probe readings to footing design
Loose fill turns up where a yard was leveled at some point, and a footing set in it can settle or creep. When probes stop early on firm soil, standard pier footings sized to the post load are often enough. When they push deep, the engineer may call for a soil report, larger footings or drilled piers. The readings also show where water collects after irrigation, which affects how the ground under the deck is graded. All of this goes onto the plan before LADBS review, so the footing schedule matches the ground it will sit in.
Opening the house wall
Next we remove a strip of siding where the ledger will go. That shows whether the rim joist is solid, what fastens the floor framing to it, and whether any old flashing is intact. Stains, soft wood or rusted nails mean repair comes first. We also locate the vents, hose bibs and electrical boxes along that wall, because each one can push the ledger line or the stair location. A patio at grade needs less of this, though we still check the foundation edge and the drainage path away from the house.

Decks & Patios in West Hills: questions
Our probe readings guide it, and the engineer finalizes it. If a West Hills lot slopes, each footing goes down through loose soil to a bearing layer, which can mean drilled piers. On level ground, shallower footings work. The plan lists every depth, and the inspector checks each open hole.
We confirm the parcel's fire hazard severity status on the city map before drawing. If the lot is in a mapped zone, decking and the space beneath it must meet ember-resistance rules. If not, normal code governs, and any approved decking can be used, with fire-rated boards still on the list.
Height usually moves it more. Area sets boards, joists and guard length, while height adds posts, bracing and depth below grade. Findings from the probe can raise the footing line on their own. We list foundation, framing, surface and guards apart in the quote, so each factor stays visible.
