A Moorpark ADU roof gathers the rain that lands on it toward a few corners, and we decide early what happens at each one. On flat, well drained ground, a downspout can feed a rain barrel or a shallow planted basin set back from the walls. On a lot that slopes, that water stays in pipe until it reaches the street, so it never soaks the ground above a bank.

Shaping the roof for fewer outlets

A hip roof drains to all four sides and needs gutters around the whole unit, while a gable sends water to two eaves. Fewer outlets mean fewer places for water to go wrong, so we put downspouts at corners facing open yard, away from the main house and the neighbors. A valley where two roof planes meet carries a lot of water to one spot, so its flashing is wide and the gutter below it is checked for overflow. Where the unit roof meets a taller wall, a cricket keeps water from pooling.

Testing the soil before water goes in

Before a basin is drawn, we dig a test hole and fill it with water to see how fast the ground takes it. Clay that drains slowly, or any spot near a footing or the top of a slope, rules out putting water into the ground. In those cases solid pipe runs from each downspout to a curb outlet or another approved point. Moorpark's building department sees this drainage on the plans, and inspectors look at the pipe while the trenches are still open.
